What Is Nail Surgery & What Happens On The Day?

NAIL SURGERY EXPLAINED

About to have a minor operation on your toenail(s) and not sure what to expect? Let us put your mind at ease and reassure you that you’re in great hands!

You will be given a local anaesthetic in your toe. Once it has taken full affect you will no longer feel pain but you will feel the podiatrist touching and moving your toe. You should eat normally beforehand but avoid alcohol for the previous twenty four hours.

NAIL SURGERY IS USED WHEN A NAIL…

  • requires removal – for example, an ingrown toenail
  • fails pallative care – blackened, dystrophic
  • is chronic – recurrently troublesome
  • is fungal – chronically infected
  • causes pain and discomfort

MINOR SURGICAL PROCEDURES…

The following can be treated under local anaesthetic at our clinic under digital, ankle or infiltration block:

  • neurovascular corns
  • epidermal cysts
  • painful verrucas
  • spikectomy of nail
  • subungual corns

This type of surgery uses a local anaesthetic to block the pain fibres allowing for a pain free, deeper and more accurate treatment to be given.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

What Exactly Will Happen?

Once your toe is numb, the nail portion will be removed and the nail bed treated with a chemical to cauterize the nail bed.  A dressing will then be applied.

What Are The Risks?

There are risks with all procedures.

Whilst there is high success rate of 96%, there is a small chance that the nail can grow back.

There may be damage to surrounding tissue including nerve and small blood vessels causing temporary bruising, redness or tingling, following the procedure.

There may be some permanent or temporary imperfections to the nail such as discolouration or change in texture or shape.

The worst case scenario is that the toe could become infected which may increase the length of healing time.

What Are The Benefits?

This very successful procedure should resolve your ingrowing toenail.

Permanent removal of the troublesome nail.

Return to normal activities.

Reduction of pain.

Can I bring someone with me?

You are advised to be accompanied home and under 16’s must bring a parent or guardian with them.

You are very welcome to bring a book or magazine with you.

How Long Will It Take?

This varies according to the procedure you are having.

Treatment may last for up to 1 hour to allow for the anaesthetic to take effect, for the procedure to be completed and for your toe to be dressed.

We will take great care of you and we’ll help you to feel relaxed throughout.

Can I Wear Shoes?

You will require an open-toed shoe for the day of the procedure to accommodate the dressing.

We recommend you continue to wear this type of footwear for as much of the healing period as possible where it is practical to do so.

What Is Partial Nail Avulsion(s) or Total Nail Avulsion?

This includes

  • Initial assessment/consultation
  • Nail surgery
  • Post operative dressing appointment
  • 2 subsequent dressing appointments
  • Dressing pack
When Can I Return To Work/School/Normal Daily Activities?

Complete healing can take between 6 to 8 weeks in most cases. Some people may need to take a few days off work/school immediately after surgery.

Participating in sports and/or swimming activities are not recommended until the toe is healed.

Will Any Aftercare Be Required?

A further dressing appointment and extra dressing appointments are recommended.
